President Ruto Nominates Kithure Kindiki as New Deputy President Following

President William Ruto has submitted the name of Interior Cabinet Secretary Professor Kithure Kindiki to the National Assembly as his nominee to replace the impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The announcement was made by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula during today’s parliamentary session.

Professor Kindiki has emerged as a leading candidate for the deputy president role ever since Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse introduced the motion to impeach Gachagua in the Senate on Thursday. Recent polling data from Infotrak indicates that Kindiki is the most favored choice among Kenyans, with approximately 20% of respondents supporting him as Gachagua’s successor.

Other notable figures considered for the deputy president position included Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, Homabay Governor Gladys Wanga, Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, and even opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Interestingly, Kindiki was among the final candidates considered for Ruto’s running mate before Gachagua was ultimately chosen. Gachagua’s selection was influenced by his grassroots appeal and financial backing, even though Kindiki had garnered substantial support from numerous Mt Kenya politicians.

Despite facing criticism against the current government, Professor Kindiki has consistently been recognized as one of the highest-performing Cabinet Secretaries in Ruto’s administration. An earlier Infotrak survey rated him with a B grade, highlighting his effectiveness in addressing key issues affecting Kenyans. He received high marks for his competence, service delivery, and communication skills.

However, his tenure has not been without challenges. Kindiki faced backlash due to a surge in abductions during the Gen Z demonstrations that occurred in June, which drew significant public attention and criticism towards Ruto’s government.

Kindiki’s nomination arrives at a time of political uncertainty in Kenya, following the historic impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua. As the new deputy president nominee, Kindiki will play a crucial role in helping President Ruto navigate the pressures of governance and restore public confidence in the Kenya Kwanza administration.
