SHIF Takes Effect, How To Register & Charges

The Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) is set to take effect on October 1, 2024, marking a significant change for Kenyans as the government transitions from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

Here’s what you need to know about this new health insurance scheme, how to register, and the associated charges.

Key Information About SHIF

  1. Transition Date: The NHIF will cease to provide services after September 30, 2024. All healthcare services will be available under the SHIF starting October 1.
  2. Management: The SHIF will be operated by the Social Health Authority (SHA), which will oversee all contributions and benefits under the new scheme.
  3. Employee Registration: Employers are encouraged to register their employees with the SHA to ensure seamless access to health services once SHIF takes effect.

How to Register for SHIF

  1. Visit the SHA Portal: Employers must access the SHA employer portal at sha.go.ke.
  2. Create an Account: Begin the registration process by creating an account and verifying it.
  3. Enter Employee Details: Once the account is set up, employers will need to input their employees’ information.
  4. Contributions: All monthly contributions, calculated at 2.75% of each employee’s salary, must be submitted to the SHIF once registration is complete.
